Night vision scopes have become a practical tool for UK pest controllers, fox shooters, and game managers over the past decade. Unlike thermal scopes that detect heat, traditional night vision (NV) scopes amplify available ambient light — starlight, moonlight, or an IR illuminator — to produce an image in near or total darkness.
In the UK, the two most relevant technologies are digital night vision (DNV) and image-intensifier (Gen 2+/Gen 3) tubes. Digital NV is by far the most accessible — brands like Pard, Pulsar Digex, Sightmark, and Hikmicro offer capable digital NV scopes from around £250. Gen 2+ and Gen 3 intensifier tubes offer superior low-light sensitivity but cost significantly more (£1,000+) and are harder to source from UK retailers with proper warranties.

For most UK foxers and rabbit shooters, a digital NV scope in the £300–£700 range gives excellent practical performance out to 100–200 metres under a clear sky with a quality IR illuminator. Look for a scope with a 940nm IR illuminator (invisible to foxes, unlike 850nm which produces a faint red glow), at least a 1280×960 sensor, and a refresh rate of 50Hz for smooth target tracking.
Mount and zero considerations: NV scopes are typically heavier than daylight glass and some require return-to-zero mounts for sharing a rifle between day and night optics. Screw-on adapters (like the Pard NV007S) that piggyback on a daytime scope are a budget-friendly alternative to a dedicated NV scope for occasional night use.
Yes, night vision is legal for pest control, fox shooting, and rabbit control in the UK. It is not permitted for deer stalking under the Deer Act 1991 (deer may only be shot during prescribed hours — see Natural England / NatureScot guidance). Always confirm current legislation for your specific use and location.
Digital night vision (NV) amplifies reflected light (ambient or IR-illuminated) to produce a video image. Thermal scopes detect heat signatures and require no light at all. Thermal is superior for detection at range and in fog or vegetation, but is significantly more expensive. Digital NV is better for positive target identification at close range, as the image shows reflected detail rather than just heat contrast.
Under a clear sky with a quality 940nm IR illuminator, a good digital NV scope (Pard, Pulsar Digex, Hikmicro) will give clear images to 150–200 metres. In total darkness without an illuminator, range drops significantly. Thermal scopes can detect foxes to 400–600 metres depending on sensor resolution and conditions.
The Pard NV007 and NV008 series are extremely popular in the UK due to their price-to-performance ratio and bolt-on adapter design. The Pulsar Digex N455 is a step up for those wanting a dedicated digital NV scope. For thermal, the Pulsar Thermion 2 XP50 is the most widely used professional choice among UK fox shooters.
You can own and mount a NV or thermal scope on a deer rifle, but you may not use it to shoot deer at night. UK law specifies permitted shooting hours for deer (approximately one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset, varying by species and country). Using NV to shoot deer outside these hours would be a criminal offence.
