Long-range shooting in the UK has grown substantially, with dedicated 1,000-yard ranges at venues including Diggle, Bisley, and multiple Highland Scotland estates. The benchmark for "long range" in British competition terms is typically 600–1,000 yards, with 1,200–1,500 yard shooting achievable on a handful of specialist ranges.
For serious long-range work, the scope is the most consequential piece of kit after the rifle and barrel. Total internal elevation travel is critical — a .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor shooting at 1,000 yards may require 25–35 MOA (7–10 mils) of elevation dial from 100-yard zero. Many entry-level scopes simply run out of elevation before reaching long range targets from standard mount heights.

Calculate your elevation budget before buying. Using your cartridge and load in a ballistic calculator, work out the total elevation required from 100 yards to your maximum intended range. Then add 25% buffer. The scope's total elevation travel (divided by two if you want adjustment above and below zero) must exceed this figure. Many 30mm tube scopes offer only 60–70 MOA total; a 34mm or 35mm tube at the same quality tier typically offers 90–120 MOA.
Image quality at high magnification separates premium long-range scopes from mid-range. Heat mirage shimmer, colour fringing, and edge softness all become obvious when you're trying to read a 1,000-yard target through 25×. Schmidt & Bender, Nightforce, and March earn their premium prices largely through their ability to resolve fine detail at high power in challenging conditions.
For 1,000-yard shooting, a minimum of 18× magnification is practical (24× or more is preferred), with at least 25 MOA (7 mil) of elevation available above your 100-yard zero, and an FFP reticle with mil or MOA subtensions for holdover capability. The Nightforce NX8 4–32×50 F2, Vortex Razor HD Gen III 6–36×56, and Schmidt & Bender PM II are the benchmark choices at the top level.
It depends on the cartridge and mount height. Many 30mm tube scopes offer 60–80 MOA of total elevation travel, which is sufficient for .308 at 1,000 yards from a standard 100-yard zero (requiring roughly 30–35 MOA of up travel). For flatter cartridges or lower rings, a 30mm tube may be adequate. For .338 Lapua at 1,500 yards or extreme cant corrections, a 34mm tube with 100+ MOA of travel becomes necessary.
The Vortex Razor HD LHT 4.5–22×50 FFP and the Athlon Cronus BTR Gen 2 4.5–29×56 FFP are excellent under £1,000. The Hawke Frontier 34 SF 4–24×50 FFP offers a 34mm tube at a competitive price. All three provide zero-stop turrets, quality glass, and sufficient elevation travel for 1,000-yard use with common cartridges.
Both work equally well mathematically. MRAD (mil) is dominant in UK PRS and ELR (extreme long range) competition because the metric math is fast: 1 click = 0.1 mil = 1 cm at 100 m, 10 cm at 1,000 m. MOA is more common in traditional benchrest. If you shoot with others who share DOPE (data on previous engagements), use whatever system they use to avoid conversion errors.
Bisley (Surrey) offers ranges to 900 yards and hosts most UK national long-range competitions. Diggle Ranges (Greater Manchester) has a 1,000-yard range. NSR (National Shooting Range) at Bisley hosts the UKPRS and other precision rifle events. Several private Scottish estates offer shooting to 1,200+ yards by arrangement. The Long Range Shooting Club (LRSC) is the main UK club for 1,000-yard competition.
