Parallax is the apparent shift of the reticle against the target when your eye moves off the scope's exact optical centreline, and it becomes a real point-of-impact error at higher magnification and closer or more variable ranges — exactly the conditions HFT, FT and close-range precision shooting involve. A side-focus wheel (mounted on the left turret housing, adjusted without breaking your cheek weld) corrects for this far more conveniently in the field than an adjustable-objective (AO) ring at the front of the scope, which requires reaching forward and often shifting your shooting position to adjust.

The parallax minimum a side-focus wheel adjusts down to matters more than whether it's side-focus or AO in principle — look for adjustment down to at least 10 yards for general HFT and close air rifle work, or 7-8 yards for FT-style lanes that start very close. Side-focus adjustment becomes standard rather than optional from roughly £200-500 upward on scopes built for close-to-mid precision disciplines; below that, expect either a fixed parallax setting or a coarser AO ring.
