An illuminated reticle lights the centre aiming point (or, on some designs, the full reticle) to stand out against dark or low-contrast backgrounds — genuinely useful for dawn/dusk deer stalking, foxing in fading light, or any scenario where a plain black reticle disappears against dark cover or a cluttered background. It's less essential for daytime vermin control or bright-condition target shooting, where a standard reticle against a reasonably lit target works perfectly well without it.

Quality varies enormously by budget: entry-level illumination is often a single fixed brightness with no off-position between settings, which drains the battery unnecessarily and can wash out your view of the target in bright conditions. From roughly £200-500 upward, expect genuine multi-stage brightness control with proper off-positions between steps, letting you match illumination precisely to the light you're actually shooting in. There's no UK licence or restriction on illuminated reticles themselves — they're treated purely as a sighting feature, same as the rest of the scope.
